World’s largest data analysis of Microsoft 365 collaboration released by SWOOP Analytics

NEW YORK, June 2, 2022 – SWOOP Analytics has released the world’s largest data research into Microsoft 365 collaboration habits, analyzing what people actually do, rather than what they say they do.

The analysis of more than 213,000 Microsoft accounts across 18 organizations found the top 10% of M365 users are the ones who may be bogged down in meetings and feeling overworked, while the bottom 50% are responsible for just 6% of time spent in online meetings.

In the six-month period analyzed, close to half the employees not in a leadership role have not had a single one-on-one call with a colleague or leader.

The interruptions from Microsoft Teams chat messages are significant, but it is overuse of email that is costing employees and their organizations the most in lost time. This lost time can equate to millions of dollars in lost productivity.

These insights from SWOOP Analytics’ M365 Benchmarking provide an unprecedented opportunity to learn about remote working habits and how people are transitioning to hybrid work.

Highlights from the report:

  • The top 10% of M365 users are responsible for 42% of total meeting time spent, whilst the bottom 50% are responsible for only 6%.

  • Email is holding us back, with few working in Microsoft Teams channels compared with internal email – missing out on huge time savings.

  • Posting in Microsoft Teams channels or Yammer instead of email could save, on average, 26 minutes a day per person. The constant interruptions from Microsoft Teams chat are significant.

  • Leaders are demonstrating superior collaboration habits than non-leaders.

  • Almost 40% of non-leader staff had not participated in a one-on-one call with either leaders or colleagues over the six-month period.

The good news is, there are a sufficient proportion of M365 early adopters to help influence the M365 adoption laggards.

“Our research shows employees have all the gear but no idea how to use it productively,” said SWOOP CEO Cai Kjaer.

“ROI calculations demonstrate the opportunity to reap huge benefits when the M365 suite is used properly. Tracking progress through the use of analytics will be critical for success.”

In the full report, SWOOP provides achievable guidelines and measurements for practical ways to improve collaboration across organizations, along with case studies from some of the world’s best M365 collaborators.
