SWOOP Chief Scientist Dr Laurence Lock Lee recently met with Mark Nelson, who co-directs the Stanford Peace Innovation lab at Stanford University with behavior designer, social entrepreneur and mentor capitalist, Margarita Quihuis. At the heart of any Enterprise Social Network (ESN) are the groups or communities formed within them. Understanding the health and productivity of these groups should therefore be front of mind. For ESNs we can look again to the more mature experiences with consumer and external customer communities for guidance. Diversity is Essential but not Sufficient

Diversity is a big word in business today. We are preached to continuously about how important having diverse leadership is to improving your performance. HBR in their article on ‘Why Diverse teams are Smarter”, identify studies showing that diversity based on both ethnicity and/or gender can lead to above average returns. In our own work with networks, research has shown that individuals with more diverse personal networks are more likely to be promoted and succeed in their occupations.
